ask a curly girl about her hair, and she will tell you about her life...
My Curl Journey
My career, and personal life as a curly girl, completely changed in 2011. I was introduced to a very new, up and coming curly haircare company - DevaCurl. Prior to this, I had been a hairstylist for about 7 years, but I never felt like I truly 'fit in' in the beauty industry. I had never felt like there was a true place for me and my curly clients in this salon culture. I have a curly story like most other curly girls - I struggled with my hair, experience traumatic salon experiences, never had good products to use, and never really felt that my hair was ever "pretty'. When I discovered DevaCurl as a product line and a cutting technique, I was truly intrigued. I took a Level1 DevaCurl Cutting class in Memphis, TN in 2011, and my mind was blown! I learned more about the technical aspects of cutting and the importance of head shape and the science of curly hair in that one 8 hour class than I did in all of cosmetology school! Once I returned to the salon and began to cut curly hair dry, curl by curl, I knew that my whole life and the lives of every curly person in my chair was about to change!
I threw myself in to the world of curls, and 7 months later, I found myself in New York City at the DevaCurl Academy, learning from the best of the best in the epicenter of curl culture. I literally cried on the last day of class because I didn't want to leave! I had finally found "my people" in the beauty industry. After the Advance Class, I just knew I HAD to be a part of this brand! I followed them all over the South East, volunteering at hair tradeshows and assisting in cutting classes. I'll never forget the day the head of the education department called me at the salon and asked me if I would like to join the new 2012 Education Team, it was one of the best days of my life!
In the years since I joined the DevaCurl family, I have shifted my focus to an almost exclusively curly clientele. I still enjoy doing all types of hair and services, but nothing touches my heart like that of a curly girl. When I have the blessing of being able to transform the way a woman feels about herself and her experience in a salon, potentially seeing herself as beautiful for the first time, it is truly one of the most joyous experiences. I have cried tears and shared laughs with the curly women in my chair, and I recieve blessings from their experiences every day! I hope to always continue to expand my knowledge of curly hair, and to continue to be a small part of their personal curl journeys.
If you are a curly woman looking for "your place" and someone who can truly understand your personal hair needs, I hope you will find it here, in my chair. I cant't wait to meet you!
